ANNUAL AND PERIODIC EVENTS SCHEDULE
Writing Ourselves In is a multimedia art installation honoring the voices, memories, and lived experiences of African American elders and residents of Modesto and Stanislaus County. Rooted in oral history, family photographs, and community storytelling, the exhibit centers moments of joy, resilience, labor, love, and legacy, woven into a living archive of Black life across generations.
On display at the McHenry Museum, February 7th-March 15th, in honor of Black History Month, Writing Ourselves In invites visitors to witness history not as something distant, but as something lived, remembered, and still unfolding.
The public is warmly invited to a community celebration and opening on Saturday, February 7, 2026 12:00 p.m. All are welcome to gather, reflect, and help lift up the stories of African Americans and their lasting contributions to the cultural fabric of Modesto.
